Natural products can net $489 million

ZAMBIA’S non-timber forest products (NTFPs) could contribute about US$489 million annually to the economy if well harnessed, Indaba Agriculture Policy Research Institute (IAPRI) says.
NTFPs are natural products that are found in the forest which include mushrooms, thatching grass, wild edible ants, wild honey, wild fruits and wild animals.
During a dissemination workshop for research results on managing forests for sustainable development, IAPRI research fellow Hambulo Ngoma said NTFPs have great potential to contribute to the economic well-being of rural households and the country in general.
“Recent research results indicate that both indirect and non-use values of NTFPs could contribute about 2.3 percent gross domestic product,” Dr Ngoma said.
