ABOUT two hundred judokas will compete for honours at next month’s 2017 National Judo League slated for Kitwe.
The event is scheduled for August 29 at Kamfinsa Police College.
National team coach Moola Lipimile said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that 16 teams from across the country have confirmed participation.
Lipimile is optimistic the teams will send their best judokas.
“This tournament is very important because it will help me as national team coach to assess all the judokas from participating clubs. I therefore appeal to all the judokas to take the competition very serious,” he said.
Green Buffaloes are reigning champions.
The teams are Mongu, Livingstone, Maheba, Kasaka, Mazabuka, Central Sports Club, Lechwe and Kumasamba.
The rest are Kamfinsa, Green Buffaloes, Lilayi, Green Eagles, Police Headquarters, Sebo, Ippon and Mulungushi University.
And Zambia Judo Association president Alfred Foloko urged judokas to continue working hard if they are to emulate Youth Commonwealth Games gold medallist Simon Zulu.
Zulu won gold in the -66 kilogramme category in Bahamas.
“We need more judokas to compete at international assignments. I expect all the judokas to impress during the tournament,” Foloko said.
