Name streets, roads after us, says freedom fighters

By NKWETO MFULA in Chingola
FORMER freedom fighters want roads and streets named after them in recognition for their contributions to the country.
Chingola-based former freedom fighters’ treasurer Meresiillino Bwembwya said there is need to recognise freedom fighters for their contribution to the attainment of independence.
“We resolved that some streets and roads be named after some former freedom fighters through the councils,” he said
This is according to a statement made available to the Zambia Daily Mail in Chingola yesterday.
Chingola has over 60 freedom fighters, with some of them engaged in farming in the peri-urban areas.
Mr Bwembya said the freedom fighters who held a meeting on Thursday appealed to Government to consider naming some streets and roads after them; as well as assisting them acquire land where to settle.
The freedom fighters also appealed to Government to exempt them from paying for electricity, water bills and council ground rates, which they said were too high for them.
