A 35-year-old woman of Nakonde has been convicted and sentenced to two years imprisonment with hard labour by the magistrate court in Nakonde for harbouring persons contrary to the laws of Zambia.
Jackline Nambule, a resident of Nakonde was arrested last year in December after Immigration officers from Chinsali regional office found 16 Ethiopian nationals locked in a Nakonde house where she and her husband resided.
Immigration public relations officer Namati Nshinka said in a statement yesterday that Ms Nambule has since appealed against the conviction and the matter has been referred to the High Court.
“Mr Justine Sikazwe, her husband and a suspected human trafficker was not home at the time of the raid but is believed to be on the run. Immigration officers compelled Ms Nambule to open the door to the house where 16 male Ethiopian nationals were discovered,” Mr Nshinka said.
