MIDDLEWEIGHT Ben Muziyo on Tuesday night advanced to the quarter-finals at the Africa Boxing Championship after a technical knockout over Daouda
Traore of Mali.
Muziyo sent Traore to the floor 35 seconds into the second round with a barrage of punches that forced the referee to stop the fight.
Zambia Boxing Federation president Kennedy Mubita confirmed the result from Brazzaville yesterday.
“He [Muziyo] dominated throughout the two rounds and dropped Traore in the second round. He came out of the corner with strong punches. I am sure he fought like that in a bid to defeat biased refereeing that has been the hallmark of this year’s tournament,” Mubita said.
Muziyo, a bronze medallist at the All-Africa Games in Congo-Brazzaville in 2015, is Zambia’s best prospect for a gold medal.
He also won a bronze medal at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
Welterweight Mbachi Kaonga will fight Ochola Ajowi of Kenya in the quarter-finals while bantamweight Emmanuel Ngoma will exchange knuckles with Matheus Kasolo of Namibia in a pre-quarter-final bout.
