Munyonga is ZNS best judoka

COMMONWEALTH Games bronze medallist Boas Munyonga was on Friday crowned Zambia National Service (ZNS) best judoka.
Munyonga and boxer Ben Muziyo, who also won bronze, were the only athletes that won medals at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last year.
Zambia sent 43 athletes to the club games.
Munyonga was crowned best judoka during the ZNS sports award gala ceremony held at Makeni Garrison in Lusaka.
The veteran judoka was a member of the team that competed at the 2014 World Senior Championship in Russia.
Munyonga walked away with a trophy, prize money and hampers.
He has also been awarded a two-year training scholarship by the International Judo Federation ahead of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.
Other judokas, John Mwale and Enambwae Batista, were honoured for their outstanding performances while Cheruse Phiri, Racheal Masuku and Florence Mupeta got awards in the women’s category.
Green Eagles forward Mwila Mwelwa bagged the player-of-the-year award ahead of under-20 midfielder Spencer Sautu and Caeser Hakaluba.
In women football, Elizabeth Mutale was named most valuable player, Saiduna Mumba (most improved player) while Sharon Nampemba was named most consistent player.
Netball awards went to Lucy Jere (player of the year), Jessy Banda (most consistent player) and Jane Kaluba got the most improved player award.
Thomas Zulu was voted chess player of the year with Mutanya scooping the sports male athlete of the year.
Other sporting disciplines that received awards include boxing, golf, squash, tennis, and rugby, among others.
Meanwhile, ZNS Commandant Nathan Mulenga challenged Green Eagles to win the Super Division title.
He said this in a speech read by ZNS chief of health services Abynoty Mulela.
