Munyonga, Punza upbeat of Rio qualification

JUDOKAS Boas Munyonga and Mathews Punza are confident of qualifying for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.
Munyonga said in an interview from Uzbekistan yesterday that he is certain of qualifying for the Olympic Games despite the failure to reap medals at various qualifying tournaments.
Munyonga and Punza are on a two-year International Judo Federation (IJF) scholarship to prepare for the Olympic Games.
“Qualifying for the Olympics is a must. Come what may, we just have to qualify. I know we have not won any medals since the qualifiers started but I know we have earned more points and that will add to our advantage,” said Munyonga, who won a bronze medal at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
He is eyeing a gold medal at the 2016 Grand Prix Judo Championship in Kazakhstan.
“We always train for good results. Whatever effort and the sweat we go through during training, there should always be a compensation.
“I am targeting a medal at the tournament and I don’t mind what colour it will be,” he said.
Munyonga, Punza and Abigail Chindele are competing in various tournaments to qualify for the Rio de Janeiro Games.
The Grand Prix will run from May 13 to 14.
