Munyonga, Punza join camp

STEPHEN PHIRI, Brazzaville
THE national judo team’s preparations for the All-Africa Games were on Wednesday night boosted with the arrival of experienced campaigners Boas Munyonga and Mathews Punza.
The arrival of the Uzbekistan-based duo brings the number of judokas in camp to 11.
Team Zambia liaison officer Pritchard Ngoma confirmed the arrival of the two in an interview yesterday.
“Boas and Mathews have arrived and they trained with their colleagues this morning [yesterday]. Their arrival has raised morale in the judo camp,” said Ngoma, who is also Netball Association of Zambia general secretary.
Munyonga competes in the 81-kilogramme category while Punza vies in the 66-kilogramme series.
Munyonga won a bronze medal at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games while Punza lost in the second round.
The duo did not perform to expectation at the World Championships last month.
Joshua Nyondo (60kg), Victor Syamwampe (73kg), Edward Kamwandi (-90kg) and Agida Phiri (-100kg) make up the men’s team.
The women’s team has Abigail Chindele (48kg), Naomi Zungu (57kg), Lestina Siapeya (63kg), Mildred Nyondo (78kg) and Lydia Zulu +78kg).
The judo competition gets underway next Monday.
