UZBEKISTAN-BASED judokas Boas Munyonga and Mathews Punza will next month compete at the Africa Championship in Gabon.
The tournament which will attract some of the best judokas on the continent will be used as a qualifier for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.
National team coach Moola Lipimile said in Lusaka yesterday that the International Judo Federation (IJF) has lined up a number of competitions for judokas who need to earn qualification points for the Olympic Games.
Lipimile also said the association is working round the clock to send Abigail Chindele to Gabon.
Chindele has already earned 200 points.
“The Africa Championship in Gabon is very important and it’s our wish to send as many judokas as possible, especially Chindele who already has points. Munyonga and Punza will definitely compete because they are being sponsored by IJF,†Lipimile said.
And Munyonga said from Uzerbakistan yesterday that will work hard at the tournament in Gabon.
“Qualification for the Olympics is not easy and I just have to work extra hard to travel to Rio de Janeiro next year. But from my experience here so far, I’m sure am ready to go,†said Munyonga, who won a bronze medal at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
