‘Motivate farmers to boost agro-sector’

AGCO, a worldwide manufacturer and distributor of agricultural equipment and solutions, says there is need for the new generation of farmers in Africa to be motivated to boost the agriculture sector.

In this vein, recently Zambia hosted 11 countries at the Southern African Conference of Agricultural Unions (SACAU) young agripreneurs forum, whose objectives are to create a positive image of agriculture among the next generation and develop role models from within the sector.
AGCO vice-president and general manager Africa Nuradin Osman said the forum covering farm mechanisation and the business of agriculture was held from July 10 to 12, 2017 at the AGCO’s Future Farm in Chisamba.
Other topics covered were the role of mechanisation in primary production, how technology is changing the face of farming and business and entrepreneurship skills.
Mr Osman said in a statement availed to the Daily Mail last week by AGCO manager for marketing and communications Africa Shlobi Maluleke.
“Mechanisation and technology touch farmers no matter where they are in terms of development.
“It applies to those who are just starting to mechanise for the first time, to professional agri-business seeking to raise their game and to entrepreneurs wanting to develop farmer services like mechanised contracting,” he said.
Commenting on the development, SACAU chief executive officer Ishmael Sunga said the union is committed to a transformative agenda for agricultural development, which is growth-oriented and enterprise development-focused.
Mr Sunga said young people are setting a new pace in driving agricultural transformation in Africa.
“The young champions that we work with really are leaders in their communities, challenging the negative public perceptions about farming and showing that agriculture is a dynamic and, most importantly, a profitable career to pursue,” he said.
In 2015, AGCO opened its 150 hectare Future Farm demonstration and training centre to support sustainable food production systems and increase farm output by using agricultural resources more efficiently.
