Mobile network operators urged to remain relevant

KABANDA CHULU, Lusaka
GOVERNMENT has challenged mobile network operators to remain relevant in the fast-growing market by seeking new ways of accommodating and optimising various resources in delivering services of superior quality at affordable prices.
And MTN Zambia has launched the prestige product that is designed to allow customers access various services such as buying vehicles, booking a flight or hotel using a phone.
Officially, launching the product on Friday, Ministry of Transport, Works, Supply and Communications director of communications Yese Bwalya said Government is striving to put in place a conducive environment that will facilitate mobile network operators, banks, merchants and payment networks to make it easier for citizens to discover and purchase products and services using available technologies.
“In this regard, Government has started formulating appropriate and responsive strategies in information, communication and technology (ICT) aimed at promoting investment in the growth of mobile networks to cover unserved and underserved areas,” Mr Bwalya said.
He said the telecommunications sector has undergone great transformation over the past decade with innovations taking place at a rapid pace.
“This remarkable increase in network speeds and the expansion of mobile broadband services have led to people demanding more services with particular emphasis on quality of service and improved user experience,” Mr Bwalya said.
And MTN Zambia chief executive officer Charles Molapisi said the company has increased its subscriber base from 200,000 in 2006 to the current 5.1 million.
“This would not have been possible without the patronage of our customers, and this growth is a testimony of an African company being true to its customers,” he said.
Mr Molapisi said MTN prestige will give customers convenience to spend less time on administration and more time on making money for their businesses.
“This product is a start of journey we intend to walk to the finish; we invite people to be a part of this long walk to distinction and exclusivity. This offer has been designed to give convenience, whether you are looking for the best deals on hotels, flight, order a vehicle, order a pizza, all at your fingertips,” he said.
MTN prestige members will also be able to have various issues resolved through Skype and WhatsApp and our dedicated staff will be on hand to assist with any queries.
