Ministry of Health assures workers on unpaid allowances

THE Ministry of Health says the delay in paying K41.4 million outstanding allowances and other personal emoluments it owes health workers in Eastern Province is due to inadequate funds.
Ministry of Health spokesperson Kennedy Malama has since urged health personnel in the country to be patient as Government mobilises funds to pay all outstanding allowances.
Dr Malama said in an interview that his ministry is committed to ensuring that the debt in allowances and other personal emoluments is cleared as soon as the funds are available.
“The ministry wants to ensure that the debt is paid off as soon as funds are available. We would like to appeal to health workers countrywide to be patient and just assure them that the issue is receiving maximum attention,” he said.
Recently, senior health information officer Ovost Chooya said during a Ministry of Health provincial review workshop in Chipata that a total of K41,406,278 was owed to health personnel in the nine districts of Eastern Province as of December 2016.
