Men, boys vital in violence fight

LINDA NYONDO, Lusaka
THE Young Women Christian Association (YWCA) says it will engage men and boys more using its Boys to Men campaign which will be rolled out to four districts this year at a cost of K12 million, to curb cases of gender-based violence.
YWCA project coordinator in Kalingalinga’s Fite area, Richard Nawa, who expressed concern at the GBV prevalence, indicated that women still remain the worst victims, hence boys and men will be targeted in the campaign.
In an interview, Mr Nawa said the campaign, which was launched in Rufunsa last year, and will this year roll out to Lusaka, Chipata, Mumbwa and Choma districts, has been designed to change the mindsets of men and boys on gender power relations to curb the GBV scourge.
He said men have continued perpetrating GBV, a situation which needs to be addressed by teaching them not to objectify women but rather treat them with respect as equal partners in every human endeavour.
