Quacks worry State - Veep
By YANDE KAPEYAVICE President George Kunda has said that government is concerned with the low standards of journalism being practised by some media houses.
He said this is so because some media organisations allegedly do not follow ethics.
Mr Kunda said it is the view of government that the media should be regulated but that it will consult them on the best mode of regulation.
He said this in response to Mandevu MP Jean Kapata (PF), who wanted to know government’s position on the Zambia Media Council.
This was in Parliament on Friday during the Vice President’s 30 minutes question time.
Mr Kunda said it will be the responsibility of the media to guide government on who should sit on the council.
“It is up to the media to come up with names of those who should sit on the council but as government, we will consult the media in coming up with statutory or self-regulation taking into consideration the ‘Fringila Consensus’,” he said.
And Mr Kunda said MPs should sensitise people in their constituencies on the need to register as voters in the current mobile voter registration exercise.
He said the onus is on MPs to encourage the electorate to register because there are still more days before the end of the exercise.
Mr Kunda said this in response to Lusaka Central MP Guy Scott (PF), who wanted to know if the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) will meet its target of registering 2.5 million new voters considering that only 10 percent have been captured so far.
But Mr Kunda said the commission still has some time to meet its target.
He said after the 90 days period, ECZ will examine the statistics and determine the way forward.
“We need to register as many people as possible especially in rural areas. So this programme is on course,” Mr Kunda said.
