Police shoot dead 5 suspects
By ZANGOSE CHAMBWAPOLICE in Lusaka yesterday shot dead five suspected dangerous criminals after an exchange of gunfire in Lusaka west area.
Police spokesperson Bonnie Kapeso said in a statement issued yesterday that the suspects were killed by a combined team of police officers.
He said two other suspects escaped the Police ambush.
Mr Kapeso said the incident occurred around 12:00 hours yesterday on the old Mumbwa road.
He said out of the five suspects who were killed, four are foreigners while the other is a Zambian.
“The police got hold of the criminals after raiding a hide-out in Lusaka west where they were strategising to stage another aggravated robbery after getting away with K60 million from a bakery in Kamwala,” Mr Kapeso said.
He said the police have recovered an AK47 rifle with six rounds of ammunition.
The bodies of the deceased are lying at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) mortuary.
Meanwhile, two people died in Ng’ombe township on Thursday after being swept away by strong rain currents.
Mr Kapeso said a 30-year-old unidentified man died after he slipped off a bridge when he was crossing a stream.
He said the body of the man was found five metres away from the bridge.
And in a similar incident, a 17-year-old girl, Zinkiwe Kaombwa, of the same compound, died in a stream near Chamba Valley in the early morning of yesterday.
