Sakuwaha rejects US dollars 2,000 salary
By STEPHEN PHIRI

ZESCO United striker Jonas Sakuwaha has rejected the US$ 2,000 monthly salary (about K9 million) offered by French Ligue One side FC Lorient.

Zesco secretary Justin Mumba said at a media briefing in Lusaka yesterday that Lorient were offering between US$ 2,000 and US$ 3,000 as salary.

Mumba said Lorient have offered Sakuwaha a one-year contract.

“Jonas and the French club have not yet agreed on personal terms. On our part as the Zesco executive and our colleagues at Lorient we have agreed on the contract,” he said.

Mumba said they will engage Lorient in discussions in a quest to find a better salary for Sakuwaha.

Mumba said Zesco wanted to get a lucrative salary for the player.

Sakuwaha attended trials at Lorient from July 7-16.
Meanwhile, Mumba said despite having a depleted team due to injuries and suspension they are confident of a positive result against Sudanese against El Merreikh in Sunday’s Orange Champions League Group A match.

Goalkeeper Jacob Banda, defenders Rodgers Kamwandi, Kunda Mushota and striker Nicholas Zulu will miss the clash due to suspensions while defenders William Chinyama, Nyambe Mulenga and midfielder Yonah Mwango are injured.

He said Chinyama has started light training but will not be featured in Sunday’s encounter set for Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka.

Zesco moved to Lusaka yesterday and are accommodated at Lusaka Hotel.

Coach Fighton Simukonda named 19 players for battle against El Merreikh who arrive in Lusaka today.
Al Hilal also of Sudan have seven points, Zesco and Kano Pillars of Nigeria have four points but the Zambians have a better goal aggregate and El Merreikh have a point.

The Zesco squad:

Goalkeepers: Kabwe Chansa, Charles Chisha.
Defenders: Leonard Silungwe, William Chinyama, Douglas Msiska, Chalwe Kabamba, Hichani Himoonde
Midfielders: George Phiri, Kondwani Mtonga, Matthews Chikwete, Siloni Jere, Maybin Mwaba, Clifford Chipalo, Lottie Phiri

Strikers: Enock Sakala, Jackson Mwanza, Innocent Mwaba, Josephat Nkhoma and Jonas Sakuwaha.
