Chipungu counts on Kansanshi,Lumwana over stadium
By DEAN MWAANGA
MINISTER of Sport, Youth and Child Development Kenneth Chipungu has appealed to Lumwana and Kansanshi mines to help fund the completion of the Solwezi Stadium.
Construction of the Solwezi Stadium, which started over 20 years ago, has stagnated despite all the major works being completed.
Chipungu said in an interview recently Government appreciates the help the two mines have given towards the project.
He said Government alone will not manage to complete construction of the stadium without the help of the mines and other business organisations in North-Western Province.
“Lumwana and Kansanshi have substantially funded the completion of the project and we are still appealing to them to help us finish all the construction works,” Chipungu said.
And provincial sports development co-ordinator Derrick Chilala said it is estimated that K3 billion is needed to complete construction of the stadium.
Chilala said Kansanshi Mine has funded the installation of floodlights, sinking of a borehole and construction of the perimeter wall.
He said Lumwana Mine has also shown commitment to help complete construction of the stadium by sending a construction manager to make an on-the-spot check of the stadium.
The project has a provision for two football pitches, two tennis courts and two volleyball courts, rugby and hockey fields, two basketball courts and a swimming pool.
Chilala said the stadium will have a clubhouse that will house facilities for indoor games.
