RSZ invests $70m in 6 years
By NANCY MWAPE

RAILWAY System of Zambia (RSZ) has described the concession of Zambia Railways as a success with over US$ 70 million invested during the last six years.

RSZ chief executive officer Banjamin Even said during the commissioning of the rail line level crossing flash lights in Kabwe that the investments into the company are significant.

Mr Even said vandalism is a major challenge facing the company.

“Vandalism of RSZ infrastructure and assets has continued costing the company billions of Kwacha per year.

This very specific ceremony was postponed twice due to three different vandalism actions where millions of Kwacha was lost in materials, spare parts and other resources,” he said.

He said the vandalism of rail line level crossing flashing lights pose serious safety risk to drivers.

He said despite the acts of rampant vandalism, RSZ shareholders and its managements are committed to continue investing in operations because of recognising the critical role railway transport plays in the social and economic development of any country.
Mr Even said RSZ has paid US$35 million in different taxes, levies and duties to Government.

He appealed to Government and other stakeholders to assist the railway company deal with security concerns to encourage it do more.

He said it is vital that railway assets and infrastructure are guarded jealously for mutual benefit to the nation and not just RSZ shareholders.
Mr Even said during the second half of 2010, the company has seen increased traffic levels in and out of Zambia.

“In the last one and half years since, traffic levels were reduced. We now see improvements and the co-operation with Tanzania Zambia Railways is yielding fruit. Jointly we have done more than 25,000 tonnes in the last three months,” he said.

He said the company is also developing storage facilities mainly in Ndola and improving cooperation with neighbouring railway firms.

Officiating at the same function, Central Province permanent secretary Denny Lumbama appealed to Government security and the public to guard RSZ infrastructure and assets as they belong to the people of Zambia.

“Rail crossing flashing lights is part of safety measures against road and rail accidents. By safely guarding them, we are guarding the lives of people on the road and railways,” he said.

Mr Lumbama said RSZ was spending millions of Kwacha in undertaking projects.
