CANON Collins alumni forms association
By BENEDICT TEMBOCANON Collins Trust alumni on Thursday night formed an association that will aim at uplifting the standards of education for underprivileged Zambians as well as promote the work of the British organisation in Zambia.
Canon Collins Trust has, for over two decades, promoted education in Southern Africa by offering postgraduate scholarships to outstanding students in the region who go on to study in British and South African universities.
Zambia Revenue Authority employee, Nchimunya Monde was elected president of the alumni, while Hildah Nyambe is the vice-president. Francis Simui from the University of Zambia is the secretary and Zambia Daily Mail’s Isaac Chipampe is in charge of publicity.
Mr Monde encouraged members of the alumni association to work hard and avoid failure.
Speaking at the function, Canon Collins Trust programme manager, Jean Tullet, who is touring Zambia from England, said the number of Zambians applying for scholarships has reduced this year and encouraged the alumni to sensitise Zambians about the scholarships.
“Last year’s applications reduced by a third in Zambia and we as Canon Collins want to ensure there is a balance in the applications coming from Southern African countries, she said.
“But we shall not compromise on the quality of applicants just to raise numbers,” she said.
And British Council Education and Marketing officer Anshell Kanyemba said Ms Tullet was in the country to interview short-listed students for scholarships this year.
“Jean decided to come and participate in the interviews which took place on Wednesday this week,” he said.
Ms Tullet will also visit Canon Collins alumni based on the Copperbelt.
