Measles resurgence: Factors at play

EMELDA MWITWA, Lusaka
MEASLES has broken out in Lavushimanda District of Muchinga, claiming lives of about 38 children at a time when there is a global surge of the deadly disease by over 50 percent.
The disease has broken out in Kapilya village in Chief Chiundaponde’s area.
This comes at a time when the World Health Organisation (WHO) says efforts to eliminate measles were backsliding globally even in rich countries where immunisation coverage was previously high.
WHO director of immunisation and vaccines Katherine O’brien told a news briefing in Geneva recently that preliminary data indicates that in 2018 alone, 136,000 measles deaths were reported worldwide.
Madagascar is one of the hard-hit countries, having recorded 922 deaths to measles and 66, 278 cases between October 2018 and February 12, 2019.http://epaper.daily-mail.co.zm/
