Mbala vets seize beef

THE Department of Veterinary Services in Mbala has seized a tonne of beef smuggled from Kaseshya in Tanzania.
Mbala district veterinary officer Stephen Tembo said this in a statement issued to the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) on Tuesday.
Dr Tembo also said eight vehicles were seized in a joint operation with the Zambia Police Service at the weekend.
He said the department of veterinary services had imposed a ban on the movement of cloven hoof animals and their products following an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Mbala in February this year.
Dr Tembo, however, regretted that traders and residents are still illegally moving animals despite adequate sensitisation on the ban.
He hoped that the seizure of beef and vehicles will serve as a deterrent to would-be offenders.
Dr Tembo said seizure notices have been served on the owners and the process of disposing of the seized items has commenced in accordance with the Animal Health Act No. 27 of 2010. ZANIS
