Mazabuka bus, taxi drivers protest

Mazabuka town

NANCY SIAME, Lusaka
BUS and taxi drivers in Mazabuka yesterday marched to the district commissioner’s office in protest against the arrest of several of their colleagues during the Christmas period for various traffic offences.
But police have maintained that they will not allow wrecks on public roads during the festive period.
Southern Province commissioner of police Bonny Kapeso said the protest was peaceful.
Mr Kapeso said during the Christmas and New Year period, police throughout the country are on such joint operations with the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) to ensure that only road worthy motor vehicles are mobile to reduce road traffic accidents.
“There’s no need for apprehension among drivers if their vehicles are in perfect condition, but if they want to cash in using defective vehicles, they will need to do a little more of explaining to law enforcement officers,” he said.
Mr Kapeso said the operations will continue until Tuesday next week.
