Mayoral race starts

PRISCILLA CHIPULU, STEVEN MVULA
Lusaka
TWO citizens have petitioned the Constitutional Court seeking an interpretation on whether or not a councillor can contest a mayoral election without resigning as a civic leader.
Mandevu’s Mpulungu Ward 23 councillor Christopher Shakafuswa and law student Isaac Mwanza filed the originating summons in the Constitutional Court yesterday.
Mr Shakafuswa and Mr Mwanza have taken legal action against Attorney General Likando Kalaluka and the Electoral Commission of Zambia.
They are seeking determination on whether or not a serving councillor elected to a position of mayor ought to resign his or her ward-based seat.
This follows the death of Lusaka Mayor Wilson Kalumba last week on Tuesday.
