Mayor leads traders in cleaning market

KABWE town

KABWE mayor Prince Chileshe on Monday led scores of traders to clean surroundings of the new Kasanda market.

The cleaning exercise was held in partnership with Association of Vendors and Marketeers (AVEMA).
Mr Chileshe led the traders to clean various sections of the market and collected garbage from undesignated dumping areas such as drainages.
Speaking in an interview after the exercise, Mr Chileshe said he is happy to have participated in cleaning the market, which is one of the biggest in Kabwe.
“This exercise was all about cleaning Kasanda market and this was an initiative of AVEMA. I would like to commend AVEMA for this initiative,” Mr Chileshe said.
Mr Chileshe said Kabwe Municipal Council (KMC) desires to see traders conduct their businesses in a clean environment.
He said this can only be possible if traders also participate in cleaning markets.
He said much as the KMC cleans, traders should also have an interest in keeping their environment clean.
And AVEMA Kabwe district chairman Vincent Tembo said ensuring traders’ conduct their businesses in a conducive environment is one of the objectives of his organisation.
Mr Tembo commended Mr Chileshe for leading by example in promoting cleanliness in markets.
Mr Tembo said traders at the market were encouraged that Mr Chileshe joined them in the cleaning exercise.
“My appeal to marketeers is that this programme should be ongoing. It is good that we had the mayor among us to clean the market,” Mr Tembo said.
He challenged traders in other markets to emulate them.
He also urged KMC to double its efforts in collecting garbage from markets.
