MINISTER of Gender Nkandu Luo has said that Zambia will this year celebrate the International Women’s Day, which falls on March 8, through carnivals instead of the usual march past.
Professor Luo said in an interview that it’s time women showcased their talents and their important roles in contributing to national development.
“Previously we used to march because we felt marginalised, this was a way of giving a punch message to people in authority so that they could consider us in decision-making positions and other high ranks in various institutions. This is no longer the case, we have women who have penetrated male-dominated fields, so what is the marching for?†Prof Luo said.
She said this year women from all walks of life will come in numbers to exhibit at the commemoration in style.
The minister said among the people who will be there include female doctors who will render free services to the public. Marketeers and the first female pilot will also be in attendance.
Prof Luo said there will also be a tent for female lawyers who will be offering free legal advice to the public.
“That day will also bring in female farmers to come and talk about their contribution to the agriculture sector, as well as female engineers who will be in attendance,†she said.
A woman’s place is no longer in the kitchen; women are now demonstrating that they are as capable as men in contributing to national development.
And Prof Luo has asked women to ensure that they access the Women Economic Funds which the ministry is offering in various parts of the country.
She said the ministry is implementing the Agriculture Development Value Chain Enterprise (ADVANCE) in rural areas aimed at empowering women with tractors and tillers for their fields.
She said las t year 11 tractors were handed over to different women groups and the programme is expected to be rolled out to other parts of the country which have not yet benefitted. The programme will benefit all women irrespective of political affiliation.
