By MONICA KAYOMBO
A MAN of Nchelenge district has set his daughter on fire after a quarrel with his wife over a K400.
And a 68-year-old man of Losa Mukunkutu village in Chief Mulundu’s area in Mwense district has been killed by an unidentified driver of an unknown vehicle on Mwense-Mansa road.
Luapula Province police commissioner Malcolm Mulenga confirmed that Rodgers Chitalu, 38, of Shishibedi village in Chief Kambwali’s area set his house on fire around 21:30 hours on Friday after a quarrel with his wife identified as Catherine Mwila, aged 33.
“Chitalu’s daughter, identified as Happy Lemba, 5, was burnt completely and died while his other daughter, Constance Chitalu, aged 2, sustained burns and is admitted to St Pauls’ Hospital,’’ Mr Mulenga said.
Mr Mulenga said the crime scene was visited and protected awaiting retrieval of the body by 06:00 hours and that the arson was reported by Justine Chilufya of the same village.
He said the quarrel between the couple ensued around 18:00 hours on Friday over a K400 that Chitalu gave his wife for upkeep but later decided to withdraw a K200 stating that it was too much.
He said the wife refused to hand back the money and left Chitalu with their two children at home.
“Chitalu also decided to leave the house briefly and when he came back he was angered further when he learnt that his wife had not yet returned home. Chitalu, who was also in a drunken stupor, decided to set the house in which their children were on fire.
We suspect he used a stick of matches to set the house on fire,’’ Mr Mulenga said.
The suspect has since been arrested by Police in Nchelenge and is in custody.
“He was arrested at 08:00 today within Chief Kambwali’s area,” Mr Mulenga said.
And in another incident, a 68-year-old man of Losa Mukunkutu village in Chief Mulundu’s area in Mwense district has been killed by an unidentified driver of an unknown vehicle on Mwense-Mansa road.
Mr Mulenga confirmed the hit and run fatal road accident yesterday and identified the victim as John Mpundu.
He said the deceased was hit by the vehicle as he was crossing the Mwense-Mansa road.
“The victim sustained head injuries and died on the spot. The body of the deceased has since been taken to Mambilima Mission Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem. The incident happened on Thursday around 24:28 hours near Chalwe village on Mwense-Mansa tarmac road, which is about 28 kilometres away from the Boma,” Mr Mulenga said.
Mr Mulenga said the vehicle that hit the deceased was coming from the northern towards the southern direction.
