Man divorces ‘troublesome’ wife

By SYLVESTER CHISHIMBA
AFTER 24 years of tolerating his wife’s drinking habits and leaving home only to return when it was convenient for her, a 51 year-old-man of Lusaka’s Kabanana Township pleaded with the Matero Local Court to grant him a divorce.
This is a case in which Keddy Ingwe sued Grace Mwanza, 42, also of Kabanana Township for divorce.
Ingwe married Mwanza in 1990 and have six children.
“The problem is that my wife has a habit of leaving home whenever we quarrel. She also has a drinking habit and is hardly ever home. I don’t even know where she is staying,” said Ingwe.
Recalling a particular day, Ingwe narrated that after returning home from work around 21:00hours, Mwanza was out.
“She only returned drunk, after midnight and found me sleeping. She again went out and never returned. She only came back after a few days and I asked her to leave. She packed her belongings in the presence of her mother and has never returned since,” he said.
Mwanza pleaded with Senior Court Magistrates Lewis Mumba and Petronella Kalyelye not to grant the divorce because she still loved her husband.
She told the court that if the divorce was granted their six children would suffer.
“I don’t want to lose him because he is the father to my children, “said Mwanza.
Mwanza however, told the court that Ingwe is a violent man who gets physical whenever they have a dispute.
The court granted the couple divorce. Ingwe was ordered to pay Mwanza K10, 000 as compensation and K200 monthly as child maintenance towards the welfare of their two youngest children.
