Man, 65, commits suicide over witchcraft suspicions

A 65-YEAR-OLD man of Nyoka village in Senior Chief Kasempa’s area has committed suicide by hanging himself to a tree near his house after being accused of allegedly practising witchcraft.
North-Western Province deputy commissioner of police Michael Nkaka said yesterday that the incident happened last Thursday around 04:00 hours.
Mr Nkaka identified the deceased as Simon Mwalabanya of Nyoka village in Kasempa.
“The matter was reported to Kasempa Police Station on the same day at around 05:40 hours by Anoshi Kyantanta that Mr Mwalabanya committed suicide after he was accused of being a wizard,” Mr Nkaka said.
And a 29-year-old man of Chinjamba village in Senior Chief Sikufele’s area in Kabompo has died after committing suicide using his wife’s Chitenge material.
The incident happened last Friday at Nyaluchaka village in Chief Mpidi’s area in Zambezi.
The matter was reported to police the following morning around 10:00 hours by Steven Kamiza of Mumbezhi in Kabompo.
Mr Nkaka said police are yet to establish the motive of the suicide.
