Man, 30, jailed for theft

By CHRISTINE CHIHAME
THE Kitwe Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a 30-year-old man of Mindolo township in Kitwe to two years imprisonment with hard labour for breaking into a salon and stealing property worth K6,270.
According to evidence submitted in court, Evans Munthali on 8 June this year in Kitwe, whilst acting with others unknown, broke into a salon and stole four wigs, a dryer, four shirts, seven ladies’ tops, six suits,  bed sheets and five pairs of jeans worth K6,270, the property of Mary Nalwimba.
Delivering judgment on Wednesday, senior resident magistrate Daniel Musonda said that the offence Munthali committed is serious and he should be punished to deter intending offenders.
“I sentence you to two years imprisonment with hard labour and if you are not happy with what I have done, you can appeal to the High Court within 14 days,” Mr Musonda said.
It is believed that on the fateful day around 23:00 hours, two men were coming from a house of mourning when they met Munthali and his friend carrying a hair dryer and assorted clothes.
The court heard that when the two men asked Munthali and his friend where they were taking the property, they responded that they were going to sell them.
The court heard that the two men were not satisfied with response from Munthali and his accomplice because they looked suspicious.
Munthali’s friend ran away but he was apprehended.
