Letter to the Editor

Long-serving teachers must be paid more

Dear editor,
ZAMBIA has about 133,000 teachers, 900 secondary schools and 9,000 primary schools. This means we have 9,000 primary school head teachers, 9,000 deputy school headteachers,18,000 senior teachers ,900 secondary school head teachers, 900 deputy head teachers and about 6,300 heads of departments.
From simple arithmetic we have about 35,100 teachers in administrative positions.
What happens to the 97,900 teachers?
The Ministry of General Education needs to come up with a system of putting long-serving teachers in a different salary scale to motivate them.
A long-serving teacher understands the dynamics of making a pupil pass an exam, hence the need to pay ‘old’ guards better than newly-recruited teachers.
