Livestock production shoots up

NANCY SIAME, Lusaka
THE livestock sector has continued to grow with the national population of pigs recording an increase of over 84 percent, Parliament heard yesterday.
President Edgar Lungu told the House that from January to June this year, the population of pigs grew by 84.4 percent, poultry by 33.1 percent, goats 24.9 percent, sheep 20.2 percent and cattle by 12.8 percent.
“The growth is due to successful implementation of programmes such as livestock stocking and restocking, enhanced disease control, creation of livestock service centres, building of milk collection centres and dip tanks,” he said.
Mr Lungu said agriculture is key to the country’s economy and that the projects being implemented in the sector are hope for inclusive development.http://epaper.daily-mail.co.zm/
