Lightning strikes boat, kills 2

By MUBANGA NONDO
TWO fishermen of Kayope village in Chief Mununga’s area in Nchelenge have drowned after their boat was struck by lightning while fishing on Lake Mweru.
Luapula Province commissioner of police Malcolm Mulenga said yesterday that the incident happened last Friday around 20:30 hours.
Mr Mulenga identified the deceased as Robam Katayi, 41, and Moses Mufwaume, 17, both of Kayope village in Chief Mununga’s area in Nchelenge district.
He said the men were in the company of three other fishermen who managed to swim ashore.
“There was strong wind, lightning and thunder as the five fishermen were fishing.  So the two persons must have been blinded by the lightning and that was how they drowned in the lake,” Mr Mulenga said.
Those who swam ashore are Josephat Mwaba, 30, and two others only identified as Mambwe, 20, and Kasongo.
Mr Mulenga said police are yet to retrieve the bodies from the lake.
