LCC dishes K17m, clears half of retirees

THE Lusaka City Council has forked out K16.9 million to clear almost half the number of retirees owed terminal benefits as at June 30, 2015.
Of the 453 retirees, 167 have been paid their terminal benefits, Lusaka town clerk Alex Mwansa said in a statement released by LCC assistant public relations manager Brenda Katongola yesterday.
Mr Mwansa said K16.914 million has been paid to the retirees from January to June 2015 from a debt that stood at K53.94 million at the beginning of 2015.
The town clerk explained that the LCC has an outstanding balance of K33.96 million to pay the remaining 286 retirees as at June 30, 2015.
He said the local authority has committed itself to paying off the debt for the current retirees by December 31.
He said the finance department has put in place mechanisms to clear the outstanding retirees and the plan is working out well.
