LUSAKA City Council has buried 40 unclaimed bodies from the University Teaching (UTH) Hospital mortuary.
Council acting public relations manager George Sichimba said in an interview that the bodies had not been claimed from November 2017 to February 2018.
Mr Sichimba said the bodies caused an unpleasant stench in the mortuary, contrary to the Public Health Act.
In accordance with the law, a 14-day notice was issued for members of the public to claim the bodies before they could be buried.
Mr Sichimba said after 14 days, UTH wrote to the council notifying it that out of the 41 bodies, only one was claimed.
