LAST Thursday’s mayoral by-election was characterised by voter apathy. This can be attributed to the failure by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to publicise the election.
The electorate were supposed to be educated on the need to vote on the polling day.
It is mind-boggling to note that just a few voted on the polling day despite the day having been declared a public holiday by President Edgar Lungu.
Every election taking place under the supervision of the ECZ should be properly organised through publicity and sensitisation so that many people participate in voting.
Lusaka has 840,000 registered voters and it was surprising that less than 20 percent of the eligible voters cast their votes.
I wish to appeal to ECZ to widely publicise and sensitise voters to avoid apathy.
