MELODY MUPETA, Kitwe
AFTER realising that his wife of nine years will never stop patronising bars and spending most of her time at kitchen parties, a 37 year-old man of Kamitondo Township in Kitwe has finally decided to quit his marriage.
This is in a case in which Francis Mwewa, 37, sued Annie Chabala, 25, for divorce on grounds that the wife is a drunkard.
Mwewa told the court that the two tied the knot in 2008 and that since their reunion, his wife has been patronising nightclubs and usually comes home drunk.
He said when the wife goes for kitchen parties, she usually comes home late and always in a drunken stupor.
“My wife’s job is to patronise bars and drink alcohol, disregarding her roles as a mother and wife,” he said.
Mwewa told the court that the two had earlier filed for divorce in the same courtroom but opted to reconcile because his wife promised to change her behaviour.
He pleaded with the court to grant them divorce because his wife has packed her belongings and left their matrimonial home.
But Chabala told the court that problems in their marriage started when the two went to stay at her mother in-law’s place.
She said her husband would go home drunk and pick a fight with her.
She told the court that she is tired of being taken to courts to resolve their marital differences and asked the court to dissolve their marriage.
Buchi senior local court Magistrate Caroline Mbewe and magistrate Elita Bwalya granted the couple divorce and asked Mwewa to compensate Chabala with K10,000 to be paid in monthly instalments of K250.
