Kanyemba beats All-Africa Games envoy

ELIZABETH CHATUVELA , Mongu
NATIONAL junior champion Mary Kanyemba on Saturday defied odds, beating experienced Abigail Chindele in the Mongu Open Judo Championship 48kg senior category final.
Kanyemba deserved to win as she exposed Chindele’s weaknesses at Kambule Technical Secondary School in Mongu.
Chindele was part of the team that represented the country at the 2015 Congo Brazzaville All-Africa Games.
Both Chindele and Kanyemba were representing Zambia Police Judo Club.
Kanyemba also triumphed in the junior cadets’ category.
The splendid performance saw Kanyemba being crowned best female judoka.
Others who collected individual awards are Michael Mwabi and Simon Zulu in the men’s senior and junior categories respectively.
And Zambia National Service emerged overall winners after managing 28 points.
In second position were Zambia Police with 27 points with hosts Mongu finishing third on 24 points while Ipon were fourth on 17 points.
Central Sports Club, who only fielded three judokas, managed 10 points.
Speaking during the medal presentation ceremony, Zambia Judo Association president Alfred Foloko said he was impressed with the level of competition exhibited by judokas.
Foloko, however, cautioned judokas that triumphed to guard against complacency.
Meanwhile, Foloko donated judo suits to Mongu club.
He said the association will continue supporting the club as it has shown commitment since its formation three years ago.
Western Province judo chairperson Winston Simuthali, who received the donation, thanked the association for the gesture.
