Kambwili commends mine

MINISTER of Information and Broadcasting Services Chishimba Kambwili has thanked CNMC-Luanshya Copper Mines plc for contributing to Zambia’s food security by donating 100 bags of fertiliser worth K40,000 to selected farmers in Luanshya.
Speaking in Luanshya yesterday at a hand-over ceremony, Mr Kambwili said it was an exciting day for him to receive the donation on behalf of the farmers.
“We say you are only able to know real friends in your times of need. We thank Luanshya Mines for giving the donation during the time the mines are facing challenges. On behalf of President Lungu, I thank you,” Mr Kambwili said.
He said mining companies are going through hard times following the plummeting prices of copper on the international market.
Mr Kambwili said the low copper prices on the international market have adversely affected the strength of the kwacha because Zambia is a mono economy.
He challenged more Zambians to diversify to agriculture and take advantage of the current favourable weather conditions.
CNMC Luanshya Copper Mines chief executive officer Luo Xingeng said his company will continue supplementing Government’s efforts through its corporate social responsibility.
Mr Luo said the mining company will continue to play an active role in improving the country’s food security. It started the support programme in 2009.
“This is our humble contribution to our valuable small-scale farmers at a cost of K40,000,” Mr Luo said.
Speaking on behalf of the recipients, Fidelis Musonda said the farmers will remain grateful to CNMC Luanshya Copper Mines for the donation.
Mr Musonda said farmers in the country have a responsibility to work hard to reduce poverty.
