FORMER international defender Joseph Musonda is confident Chipolopolo skipper Rainford Kalaba will bag the African best player award for stars based on the continent.
Musonda said in an interview in Kitwe yesterday that Kalaba will beat South African side Mamelodi Sundowns duo of goalkeeper Dennis Onyango and midfielder Khama Billiat.
He said Kalaba deserves the award because he has been consistent this year.
Kalaba scored eight times leading Democratic Republic of Congo side TP Mazembe to lifting the Confederation Cup.
Onyango and Billiat were also instrumental in guiding Sundowns to the 2016 Champions League glory.
“Kalaba has been consistent this year both for the national team and TP Mazembe. I am sure he will win the award and make the country proud,” Musonda said.     If Kalaba triumphs, he will be the first Zambian to achieve the feat while former national team skipper Christopher Katongo won the BBC African-footballer-of-the-year crown in 2012.
Football legend Kalusha Bwalya is the only player in Zambia and southern Africa at large who has won the main continental award.
Kalusha was crowned Africa’s best player in 1988 after a splendid performance at the Seoul Olympic Games, where Zambia reached the quarter-finals.
He scored five goals at the tournament in South Korea.
