Kabulonga pupil wins junior tournament

PETER Munyinya on Thursday won the 2014 Lusaka Golf Club junior tournament.
The Grade Eight pupil at Lusaka’s Kabulonga Boys High School shot 153 gross in the 36 hole event, which attracted 102 participants.
Munyinya, 18, who turns out for Chainama Hills Golf Club, was rewarded with a golf bag and a blazer, apart from the trophy.
Chongo Nkalamo’s 161 gross was enough to finish runner-up, with Jahaanvie Walia emerging the best in the girls’ category with 178 gross.
Aryaman Mohan’s 84 gross saw him dominate the 18-hole contest while Chungu Katai was runner-up with 96 gross.
Kyle Letherby won the 9 holes category for very young golfers with 13 points, relegating Joshua Mwendapole, who had 10 points, into second place.
The best girl in this category was Loveness Nanyangwe who won a countback from Eunice Kabwe.
And speaking during the prize giving, National Sports Council of Zambia board member in-charge of gender Matilda Mwaba, who used the occasion to speak about her passion for the girl-child and sports development, said youths should take such activities seriously.
She was happy that many girls had taken part in the one-day tournament and stressed the need for the girl-child’s participation in sport.
Mwaba, while acknowledging parents’ roles in helping their children participate in sport, said it was not enough to just drop them off at venues but should watch and cheer them.
She praised the organising committee for recognising youths and stressed the significance of capturing their passion while young and nurturing it as the only way to win medals at international competitions.
“NSCZ (National Sports Council of Zambia) would like to start investing in the youth, there is an opportunity to engage NSCZ for support,” she said.
Zambia Golf Union junior coordinator (South) Anthony Malasha urged other clubs to emulate Lusaka Golf Club.
“The future of golf lies with young people,” Malasha said.
Participants were drawn from Chainama, Chibuluma, Chilanga, Choma, Mazabuka, Monze, Nchanga, Nkana, Mumbwa’s Nsanje and hosts Lusaka golf clubs.
