ABOUT K600 million is required to meet payments for the over 500,000 metric tonnes of white maize which the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) bought during the just-ended crop marketing season.
So far, FRA has paid out K103 million and the Ministry of Finance is expected to disburse the balance in the coming weeks.
In this year’s agricultural market season, the FRA is mandated to buy 500,000 metric tonnes of grains for national food reserves, with 477,900 metric tonnes being maize, 20,000 metric tonnes soybeans and 2,100 metric tonnes of rice.
