Juvenile murderer guilty of ‘prison break’

AN 18-year-old girl of Mongu who is on probation at Insakwa Approved School in Ndola, following her conviction on a murder charge, has pleaded guilty to escaping from lawful custody before the Ndola Magistrate’s Court.
The juvenile offender was placed on a four-year probation by the Mongu High Court after she was convicted of murder, but she escaped from the probation centre and started patronising nightclubs in Ndola.
The juvenile admitted having escaped from custody when the matter came up for plea and reading of facts before magistrate Bubala Sikalunda last Thursday.
In her admission of the offence, the girl said: “I escaped from the probation centre. I was being kept there for murder,” she said.
Ms Sikalunda convicted the juvenile for escaping from custody, but could not proceed with the sentence after public prosecutor Micheal Mwalila applied to have the girl taken to hospital for examination to ascertain her actual age. He said the girl might have clocked 19 years while at the probation centre.
“Based on the juvenile’s own plea of guilty to the charge, and admission of the facts before this court as being correct, I find her guilty as charged. But following the state’s application to have the juvenile offender taken for medical examination so as to ascertain her real age, I order that she undergoes the same,” Ms Sikalunda said.
