‘Junior golf programmes on course’

THE Lusaka Golf Club says the junior golf programme is on course despite facing financial constraints.
The club’s junior golf director Adrian Chundama said the numbers of young people taking up the sport are growing.
“The junior programme is running well but the major problem is financing,” Chundama said during prize giving of the City Clothing Limited-sponsored Lusaka Open Junior Championship on Sunday evening.
Chundama said the major challenge is paying the coaches who are teaching the teenagers golf.
The coaches running the junior programme include Steve Nawa, Mohammed Zulu, Paul Tembo and Chundama himself who handles those who graduate from the junior programme.
Addressing parents who escorted their children to the one-day event, Chundama asked for help in sourcing for sponsorship to help pay the coaches.
Chundama said Lusaka’s junior programme has been one of the most successful in the country because some of the former golfers are now useful members of society and are now giving back to the sport.
He cited Prashant Vaghela, the eight-time Lusaka Golf Open champion whose company City Clothing has been sponsoring junior golf at the club.
He also singled out Guy Phiri, a business executive who is serving on the Lusaka Golf Club executive as well as promoting junior golf.
Lusaka Golf Club captain Nsama Mataka advised the junior golfers to be committed and concentrate on the game because it could take them places, just as it has been taking Madalitso Muthiya, a former golfer at the club, to several parts of the world.
Mataka said a portion from the proceeds of the Zambia Open and the All-Africa Championships are set aside for the development of junior golf at the club.
And Chundama thanked sponsors – Parmalat, City Clothing and the Pro Shop – for facilitating the staging of the tournament.
Meanwhile, Tina Nawa bade farewll from the junior programme by bagging the Lusaka Junior Open.
Nawa, 18, bagged 153 gross to win a golf bag, travel bag and a humper.
