MINISTER of Energy David Mabumba says Government will ensure the entire North-Western Province is connected to the national electricity grid by July.
Mr Mabumba said Government is eager to complete connecting the province to the national grid in order to facilitate development.
He said his ministry wants to see to it that the whole region is connected to the national electricity grid by July this year.
Mr Mabumba, who was on a familiarisation tour of the province, said this after touring newly constructed Zesco Limited substations in Kabompo.
“As Government, we are eager to finish connecting North-Western province to the national electricity grid by July this year because we believe this will help facilitate development in the region,” he said.
Mr Mabumba urged the contractor, ELTEL, to speed up works and ensure they are completed within the stipulated time frame.
He said President Lungu is expected to commission the power project connecting Lukulu district in Western Province, and the North-Western region to the national power grid at the same time.
And ELTEL deputy local project manager Sonny Stary assured Government that his company will ensure works in Lukulu district are completed by mid-July.
Mr Stary said his company is in a hurry to connect the province to the national electricity grid because it understands the importance of the project.
“So far, everything is on schedule, and works are moving smoothly,” he said.
Meanwhile, Zesco senior manager for transmission Zaya Daka said only Chavuma and Lukulu districts are yet to be connected to the national electricity grid.
Mr Daka said Chavuma is expected to be connected to the national electricity grid by June 14. the Lukulu power project is on course, with works on the substation nearing completion.
