Intensify voter registration campaign, NGO urges

KAPALA CHISUNKA, Lusaka
FORUM For Good Governance has called for intensified sensitisation towards the on-going National Registration Card and the Voter Registration exercises.
Forum executive director Presley Chiyesu said his organisation has been monitoring both exercises in Lusaka and that there is a lot of apathy among youths.
Mr Chiyesu said in an interview that most youths in communities are not aware of the whole process of acquiring an NRC and the importance of registering as a voter if they are to exercise their democratic right next year.
“There is a lot of apathy from the youths. This we feel can largely be attributed to inadequate publicity in the two important exercises. We have been closely monitoring the exercises in Lusaka many youths are still ignorant,” Mr Chiyesu said.
Mr Chiyesu said his organisation will starting tomorrow, embark on sensitising youths in secondary on the importance of the exercises starting with Kabulonga Boys, Arakan Boys, Arakan Girls and Munali secondary schools.
He said his organisation hopes to build a data base to monitor how many youths would have registered as voters as well as acquired their NRCs by the end of the exercise.
“We hope to capture as many youths as possible during our sensitisation campaign but as civil society, we can do so much because we do not have the resources that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has at its disposal.
“Our appeal is for the ECZ to intensify the campaigns and ensure that all youths even in the remote areas are captured because they have a budget for the exercise,” he said.
