K23 billion needed for drought

GOVERNMENT urgently needs K23 billion (about US$940.6 million) in order to effectively respond to the drought disaster.
President Hakainde Hichilema, who has appealed for financial support from local and international partners, said of the amount, K1.3 billion
(about US$51.2 million) is available, leaving a financial gap of K22.5 billion.
“To be specific, K12.6 billion is required for immediate food assistance, out of which K2.8 million is available, leaving a gap of K12.53 million,” Mr Hichilema said in a statement on the drought response appeal.
The President said for the education sector, particularly expanding the school feeding programme, K784 million is urgently required.
