ZAMBIA Correctional Service Commissioner General Percy Chato says Government has commissioned the newly-built medical facilities in Eastern and Southern provinces to provide maternal and child services to mothers and their circumstantial children.
Mr Chato said in an interview that there are currently 12 circumstantial children with their incarcerated mothers in various correctional services country-wide.
He said  currently there are  377 female convicts representing 1.7 percent , two condemned inmates, 20 prohibited immigrants, nine juveniles and four on His Excellency Pleasure and  eight females sentenced to life imprisonment.
“Despite the increase, the female inmates’ cells are not as congested as the males. Both access medical services in public health institutions and in the prisons,” Mr Chato said.
