FOUR children of the same family died yesterday while their mother is nursing injuries after the house they were sleeping in collapsed on them during heavy rains in Siavonga.
And police in Kafue have arrested a 31-year-old man for allegedly strangling his 33-year-old wife after a domestic dispute.
Lusaka Province commissioner of police Nelson Phiri said in an interview yesterday that the house collapsed around 02:00 hours in Kanyelele township after a concrete block fence from a nearby house collapsed on it.
“The house collapsed after a downpour, killing the four children and injuring their mother,†he said.
Mr Phiri said efforts by the community to save the children proved futile.
He named the dead as George Chiti, 16, Harriet Chiti, 12, Robby Chiti, 9, and Cephas Bwalya, aged seven years.
Mr Phiri named the mother of the children as Ruth Fingi, 40, who is being treated for injuries in Siavonga District Hospital.
And police in Kafue have arrested a man identified as Sabena Kabamba for allegedly murdering his wife, Susan Chilekwa, aged 33 years.
Mr Phiri said the incident happened on Sunday between 03:00 hours and 04:00 hours in Mtendere township.
“Mr Kabamba has been charged with murder and is expected to appear in court soon,†he said.
Meanwhile, in Central Province police have arrested Japhet Lungu, 33, of Luano district for allegedly murdering a 50-year-old man identified as Samson Mambwe.
Police spokesperson Esther Katongo said the killing happened on Sunday around 14:00 hours in Copper Mine township, Mkushi.
“Mr Lungu dragged and pushed Mr Mambwe to the ground, landing on his back and he died instantly,†she said.
Ms Katongo said a man only identified as Arthur, a mental patient, drowned in Ngwerere Stream in Garden township in Lusaka on Sunday.
She said Arthur is reported to have slipped and fallen into the stream as he was throwing garbage.
Ms Katongo said three pedestrians also died in separate accidents which happened in Isoka, Lusaka and Kapiri Mposhi on Sunday.
An 18-year-old boy of Chief Chanje’s area in Chipata, Eastern Province, committed suicide on Christmas Day after quarrelling with members of his family.
The boy returned from a drinking spree around 16:00 hours when he picked up a quarrel with other members of his family.
Chief Chanje of the Chewa people confirmed the suicide in an interview yesterday.
Chief Chanje said the boy, identified as Soko, was put to rest yesterday.
