Hope for better 2020 harvest

MICHAEL Hamoonga, 53, of Nyawa chiefdom in Kazungula district, has been depending on farming for a livelihood. However, 2019 has not been a favourable year for him.
This is because he harvested nothing from the three hectares of land where he planted maize and other crops in the 2018/2019 farming season.
Southern Province received below-normal rainfall in the previous farming season, leaving most households food-insecure and some families depending on Government for relief food.
“It has not been easy taking care of my family because I have no alternative source of income. I have a wife and eight children, so you can imagine how hard it has been,” he says.
Mr Hamoonga wants to participate in this farming season with the hope of producing something, but because of the scarcity of resources, he has failed to find money for seeds.
