Health PS seeks blood donors

MINISTRY of Health permanent secretary Peter Mwaba says there is a shortage of blood in the country and has called on people to donate blood.
Dr Mwaba said donating blood is one way of safeguarding people’s lives.
“I have been donating blood for a long time and I know that by so doing, some lives will be saved,” he said.
Dr Mwaba was speaking in Lusaka yesterday during a blood donation event organised by Charotar Patidar Samaj and Zambia National Blood Transfusion Services.
He said blood donation has over the years saved lives of children and women because they are the most vulnerable when it comes to blood needs.
And Zambia National Blood Transfusion Service medical director Joseph Mulenga said Zambia needs a total of 150,000 units of blood annually, which it unfortunately does not manage to get from donors.
Dr Mulenga appealed to people to consider blood donation as an important undertaking so that more lives can be saved.
He said his organisation has embarked on a sensitisation programme.
